Cisco and Skype?

Published on September 1st, 2010 by in Cisco, Skype

Rumours persist that Cisco are looking into buying Skype.  I’d be very interested to understand why Cisco would wish to buy Skype.  Is it for their consumer user base, IP or potential revenue streams?

I personally don’t see the fit, unlike the excellent recent aquisition of Tandberg.  Is it a defensive move to prevent voice minutes leeking away from Cisco’s business CUCM product range or is it a pure consumer play?

  1. Hi Simon; having a little knowledge of what CISCO is up to in the Cloud space I agree with you. I should be astounded if CISCO bought Skype for the IP (which is deficient for business used and I don't see CISCO making more of a play in the direct sales space having left Webex somewhat orphaned!

Hi Symon, I agree 100% with Cisco's strategy and vision and I like the way they use collaboration technology internally. I'm just not sure they have their execution plans right to grow beyond their core network market. Buying Skype would to me just be another distraction for them.

Sure is a fun market to be in though.
