Typically when you find a tech company raising large amounts of cash via bond sales there is a big purchase in the air. As an example Cisco’s sale of circa $4billion bonds in Feb 2009 led to the $3billion acquisition of Tandberg later that year. Sadly for tech watchers I don’t think the Microsoft bond sale is anything other than a financial mechanism to release cash back to shareholders, especially because they already have $36billion of cash and short term investment to hand that they could use if they did find a suitable acquisition target.
It would be fun if MS made a big splash in the UC market with the cash. Who should they buy? How about Skype or Polycom (i don’t see any chance of either)?
